BMP to WebP
Easily convert BMP image files to WEBP.

BMP to WebP is a free tool that converts BMP image files into WebP files entirely in your browser.
Is WebP the right replacement for a BMP?
WebP is usually a better choice when you need to publish a BMP image on a website or reduce the space it takes to store or transfer. BMP is a legacy raster format commonly associated with uncompressed pixel data, while WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression.
Conversion makes sense for website graphics, screenshots, product images, and older image collections that are too large to distribute in BMP form. Major web browsers support WebP, and many content management systems and image applications can work with it.
WebP is not the right replacement when a legacy application specifically requires BMP. It also cannot recover quality that was lost before the BMP was created. For example, converting a low-quality JPG to BMP and then converting that BMP to lossless WebP does not restore the missing image detail.

Convert the file in your browser
The conversion work is done entirely in your browser. Your BMP file is never uploaded to a server. This is useful for internal screenshots, unpublished artwork, and other images that you do not want transferred to a third-party conversion service.

How do BMP and WebP store image data?
BMP commonly stores raster pixels with little or no compression, while WebP encodes the same general kind of image data using lossy or lossless compression.
| Property | BMP | WebP |
|---|---|---|
| Compression | Often uncompressed, though some BMP variants use run-length encoding or other methods | Supports lossy and lossless compression |
| Transparency | Alpha-channel support varies by BMP version and software | Supports alpha transparency |
| Animation | Does not provide a standard animated-image format | Supports multiple animated frames |
| Typical file size | Often large, especially for full-color images | Usually smaller for equivalent dimensions |
| Browser support | Inconsistent for direct web use | Supported by major modern browsers |
| Legacy software support | Common in older Windows applications and basic image workflows | May require newer software or an additional codec |
A single BMP remains a single still image after conversion. WebP's ability to store animation does not cause the converter to invent extra frames. Likewise, WebP can store transparency, but transparent output depends on whether the source BMP contains usable alpha information and whether that information is recognized during decoding.
Why might the WebP file be larger than expected?
A WebP file can remain fairly large when the image has large dimensions, detailed noise, or lossless encoding requirements. File size depends on pixel dimensions, image complexity, alpha transparency, and the encoder settings used during conversion.
A typical uncompressed BMP converted to WebP will shrink, sometimes substantially, but there is no fixed reduction ratio. A small, simple BMP contains less pixel data, so its absolute file-size savings may be smaller. A noisy scan, film grain, or a textured screenshot gives the encoder fewer repeated patterns to compress.
Consider these input-and-output cases:
- A full-screen BMP screenshot with broad areas of flat color will commonly produce a much smaller WebP file.
- A BMP that was previously created from a compressed image may carry existing artifacts into the WebP output.
Where can I use the converted WebP?
You can use WebP in modern websites, browser-based applications, many content management systems, and image delivery pipelines that accept the format. It is particularly useful for reducing the transfer size of images that began as large BMP exports.
Some older desktop programs, document systems, or vendor upload portals may still reject WebP even when major modern browsers display it correctly. In that situation, keep the BMP or create another compatible copy rather than changing the filename.
If a service requires a broadly accepted photographic format, BMP to JPG may fit better. For a Windows favicon workflow, BMP to ICO is the more relevant conversion because ICO can contain icon-specific sizes.
Questions people ask about BMP and WebP
Can one WebP file contain several BMP images?
The WebP format can contain animation frames, but an ordinary conversion of one BMP creates a still image rather than a multi-image package. Combining several source images into an animation requires a separate animation workflow.
Will a converted WebP have a transparent background?
WebP supports transparent pixels, but conversion cannot create meaningful transparency when the BMP contains only a solid background. BMP alpha data is also interpreted inconsistently across older encoders and applications, so inspect the edges against both light and dark backgrounds.
Can I upload WebP images to a social media site?
Some social networks accept WebP, while others convert it, reject it, or accept it only in certain publishing tools. If compatibility is uncertain, keep a JPG or PNG copy for that destination.
Does WebP work well for screenshots with small text?
As a format, WebP can store screenshots clearly and supports lossless compression. Lossy compression may introduce ringing or softened edges around small type, so zoom in and check menus, code, and thin lines before using a WebP file.
