GIF to PNG
Easily convert GIF image files to PNG.

GIF to PNG is a free tool that converts GIF image files into PNG files entirely in your browser.
Private browser-based conversion
All conversion work takes place in your browser, and your GIF is never uploaded to a server.
For a static example, consider a small status icon named status-dot.gif. The input is an indexed GIF with a transparent background, and the output is a PNG representation of that still image. The PNG format supports partial alpha transparency, although conversion cannot create smooth edge transparency that was absent from the GIF.

What kind of image data does PNG preserve?
PNG preserves raster image data with lossless compression and supports grayscale, indexed color, truecolor, and alpha transparency. GIF also uses lossless compression for the color values it stores, but each encoded GIF image uses no more than 256 palette entries.
- Transparency: GIF commonly treats one palette entry as fully transparent. PNG can store partial transparency, allowing soft shadows and smoother translucent edges.
- Compression: GIF uses LZW compression on indexed pixels. PNG uses filtering and DEFLATE compression and can store more color information.
- Quality: Converting to PNG does not add another lossy compression step. It also does not recover colors or detail removed when the original image was prepared as a GIF.
- Support: Current browsers, Windows, macOS, common image editors, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace broadly support both formats. Individual websites may still restrict which file extensions they accept.

Is converting a GIF to PNG the right choice?
Converting makes sense when you need a PNG for an interface element, documentation screenshot, presentation, or upload form that does not accept GIF. PNG is also appropriate when later editing requires full-color pixels or an alpha channel.
Conversion also does not improve an already degraded image. If a photograph was reduced to a 256-color GIF with visible banding, saving those pixels losslessly as PNG preserves the banding. If the goal is a compact still photograph and transparency is unnecessary, GIF to JPG may be a more suitable route, though JPG introduces lossy compression.
How large will the converted PNG be?
The PNG may be smaller or larger than the GIF because file size depends on color mode, dimensions, pixel patterns, and encoder choices.
A static logo with flat color and repeated areas often compresses well as PNG. A converter that stores the result as truecolor or RGBA may produce a larger file than a tightly optimized palette GIF, even if the picture looks identical.
If a website has an upload limit, verify both the PNG's byte size and pixel dimensions before submitting it.
GIF input issues and visual checks
Check converted PNGs for these GIF-specific issues:
- A transparent GIF may have edge pixels blended against a specific matte color. The PNG can preserve those pixels, including an unwanted white or dark fringe.
- A GIF with dithering may show a visible dot pattern. PNG stores that pattern exactly rather than reconstructing the original gradient.
- A damaged, empty, or incomplete file may not decode as a valid GIF. Renaming an unrelated file with a .gif extension does not convert its contents.
Keep the source GIF until you have checked the PNG at normal size and against the background where it will be used.
Questions people ask about GIF and PNG
Why does my PNG have a white outline around transparent areas?
The outline usually comes from edge pixels that were blended against white before the GIF was created. Changing the container to PNG does not replace those pixel colors. An image editor can remove the matte or rebuild the edge with partial alpha transparency.
Can I use the PNG in Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides?
Both applications commonly accept PNG images and preserve ordinary transparency.
Does PNG work for commercial printing?
Many print applications accept PNG, but PNG normally stores RGB or grayscale data rather than a press-ready CMYK workflow. Ask the printer which color profile, resolution, and file format it requires before treating PNG as final artwork.
Can a GIF contain more than 256 colors overall?
An encoded GIF image uses a color table with no more than 256 entries, but an animated file may use different color tables for different images. A composited animation canvas can therefore display more than 256 distinct colors.
Is my GIF uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion work is done entirely in your browser, and the GIF is never uploaded to a server.
Before using the PNG, inspect transparent edges and compare the saved file against any size or format requirements of the destination platform.
