Character counter is a free tool that counts the characters, words, and lines in any text.

When can checking a character count help avoid rejected text?

A character count helps when a platform, form, or database field accepts only a limited amount of text. Check the limit shown by the platform because field rules and account-specific limits can change.

• Compare an X post or profile bio with the limit displayed in the editor.
• Prepare Google Ads headlines and descriptions before entering them into a campaign.
• Check a LinkedIn headline, ad field, or company description.
• Keep Shopify product titles and search metadata within the limits set by a theme or app.

A practical habit is to count the final version after adding URLs, punctuation, and smart quotes. Those last edits can change the total even when the wording appears almost unchanged.

A quick counting workflow

1. Paste or type the text you want to count into the input area.
2. Read the returned Characters, Words, and Lines values.
3. Edit the text and count it again until it fits the destination field.

For example, the input Spring sale ends Friday. contains 24 characters, four words, and one line. The spaces and final period contribute to the character total.

The input Plan 2027 contains nine characters. Its word total may be lower than expected because the tool uses PHP's str_word_count, which does not treat a standalone number as a word.

How should you interpret characters, words, and lines?

Characters measure the length of the entered content, words measure recognized word units, and lines show how many rows of text are present.

• Characters is useful for form fields, post limits, metadata, and database columns. Spaces, punctuation, and line breaks are characters.
• Words is useful for a quick editorial estimate, but it may differ from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or a publishing system because each program can apply different word-boundary rules.
• Lines helps with address blocks, pasted lists, captions, and records intended to appear one per row.

These figures do not prove that another service will accept the text. A platform may also restrict bytes, words, markup, reserved characters, or the number of visible symbols.

What can make the total look surprising?

Whitespace, Unicode composition, and the definition of a word can make the result differ from a visual estimate.

The character total is calculated with mb_strlen, which handles multibyte text according to the configured character encoding rather than simply counting raw bytes. However, one user-perceived character, or grapheme cluster, is not necessarily one Unicode code point. An accented letter can be stored as one code point or as a letter followed by a combining mark, and some emoji are sequences containing several code points.

The word count uses str_word_count. Accented words, non-Latin scripts, apostrophes, hyphens, and mixed letter-number values may therefore be classified differently from a modern document editor. Numbers still contribute to the character count even when they are not included as words.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the result for a database column limit?

Only if the database limit is defined in characters and applies the same Unicode assumptions. Some database columns or APIs enforce byte limits, and a multibyte character can occupy more than one byte. Check the column type, encoding, and validation rule before importing data.

Should I paste passwords or confidential records into the tool?

The input travels to the server over HTTPS because processing happens on the server, and it is not stored. Even with that handling, avoid pasting passwords, private keys, authentication tokens, or regulated records into Character counter.

Can the counter validate JSON, HTML, or source code?

No. It can count the raw content you paste, including brackets, tags, indentation, and escape characters, but it does not confirm that the syntax is valid. Use a format-specific validator before saving or publishing the code.

Does an empty line matter in a pasted list?

Yes, an empty row can affect the line structure and may create a blank record during an import. Before uploading a list, inspect the beginning and end for accidental blank rows and confirm that each intended record occupies one line.
